A liver transplant is a surgical procedure that replaces a diseased liver with a healthy liver. The donor's liver is transported in a cooled salt-water (saline) solution, which keeps the organ viable for up to 8 hours. The appropriate tests can then be performed to match the donor with the recipient. A surgical cut in the upper abdomen is used to remove the donor's new liver. It is implanted in the person who requires the liver and connected to the blood vessels and bile ducts. The procedure could take up to 12 hours. The recipient will frequently require a large amount of blood via transfusion. Your doctor will refer you to a transplant facility. The transplant team will check to see if you are a good candidate for a liver transplant. You will pay a few visits over the course of several weeks or months. Blood will be drawn and x-rays will be taken.
