Laparoscopic hernia repair is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that can be used to treat a variety of hernias. During this procedure, the surgeon is guided by a device known as a laparoscope or a thin tube with a camera on the end. Three to four small incisions are made during the procedure. On rare occasions, the mesh may be used to prevent tissue protrusion. A laparoscopic hernia repair typically takes less than an hour to complete. A hernia is a gap that develops in the abdominal wall as a result of muscle weakness. Internal organs like the intestines or abdominal tissues may occasionally protrude into the opening as a result of this weakness. If untreated, hernias can lead to serious health problems like infection and/or blood loss in the intestine. Laparoscopic surgery is used to treat hernias that are less severe and smaller. Patients with the following hernias may be candidates for laparoscopic hernia repair: Hernias in the groin, ventral, and recurrent areas.
